OpenAI just unveiled ChatGPT Work, a new mode that promises to do more than chat: it can dig through your files and apps, build documents, slides, spreadsheets, even simple web tools, and keep grinding away on a project for hours. On paper, it’s a huge leap from “answer my question” to “finish my to-do list.” OpenAI is pitching it as a helper for everything from sales prep to budget reviews, with early examples claiming it cuts work that used to take days or weeks down to hours. Big promise, big energy, and yes, a very big chance for the internet to get messy about it.

And messy it did. The loudest reaction was basically: “Wait, isn’t this just OpenAI’s version of Anthropic’s Cowork?” Multiple commenters immediately called it catch-up, not revolution, with one bluntly saying it “feels overdue.” Others were less interested in the corporate race and more interested in office politics, with the funniest comment of the thread asking, “Can it replace my manager?” That one pretty much sums up the mood: part awe, part suspicion, part workplace revenge fantasy.

Then there’s the confusion drama. Some users are already annoyed by the growing pile of modes—Chat, Work, Codex, Cowork—and say the interfaces are starting to feel like a menu with too many nearly identical sandwiches. In other words: people like the idea of an AI coworker, but the comments show a split between “this is genuinely useful” and “why are there now 14 buttons for the same robot?”
